Nanowrimo 2011 Day #1

Nanowrimo has begun and there was much clicking of the keyboard keys and the scratching of pencils/pens I am sure. I actually started this years event with …uh…sleeping. Yup. Slept through the entire start of it.

I’ve learned over the years that I really do need to sleep. Contrary to what my brain keeps telling me. So yes, I slept while many of my friends were typing away madly at their mss’s.

Want to know what my dreams were like? They were filled with scenes that I plan on writing over the next month. Yep. I settled on what I am writing and it’s not what I originally thought it would be. The idea is simple enough really, it will all come down to the execution.

My project this year is again a personal one, and will likely never be published.  (Other than perhaps for the person who initially created the world within which I am writing and I manage to cobble it together the way I see it in my writing minds-eye.) What is it? Well, call it a fictional biography of sorts. I am looking forward to seeing how it develops.

I’m off to a good start this morning. Writing 1707 words in about an hour an a half. That means I’ve met the average word goal for the day. Of course, I’m not going to stop there. I will write more. Unlike previous years I will not be sitting at the computer all day every day writing. Though I am sure there will be days where the story takes on a life of its own. Necessitating longer periods of concentrated writing.

I will take breaks and do other things – laundry, play with the cat, read, and most importantly eat. Heck, Matt asked me not to do any writing next week when we go on vacation. If he had asked me that a few years ago I probably would have thrown a fit. But I am approaching Nanowrimo 2011 a little differently this year.

The goal is to not worry about writing, but just to write. I may honestly not cross the finish line this year. And I realized I am fine with that. Just sitting down and writing, even when they are incoherent scenes feels good.

I’ll keep updating my progress and of course you should look for the pep-talks that are going to be arriving shortly.

November is a busy month and there is a lot going on even if you aren’t participating in a 50k word sprint.  How would you deal with it?
